Auto Restoration

The Challenge

Media blasting is the default for auto restoration, but it creates problems that every restorer knows. Sandblasting warps thin sheet metal panels. Soda blasting is gentler but embeds sodium residue in seams and joints that causes corrosion months later. Walnut shell and glass bead leave media particles trapped in recesses that contaminate subsequent paint and coating work.
Chemical dipping strips paint effectively but acid residue migrates into seams, spot-weld joints, and hemmed edges. Months after the car is reassembled and painted, rust blooms appear at every seam where acid was trapped. The only remedy is disassembly and re-stripping.
On engine components, the problem is precision. Cast iron blocks, aluminum heads, and machined bearing surfaces cannot tolerate the dimensional changes that abrasive blasting causes. Valve seats, cylinder bores, and gasket surfaces must remain within thousandths-of-an-inch tolerances. Laser cleaning removes carbon, oil, and gasket material without any measurable dimensional change.

Body Stripping

Remove multiple layers of factory paint, aftermarket paint, body filler, and primer down to bare metal. No heat distortion. No media residue in panel gaps, seams, or spot-welds. No warping on thin-gauge sheet metal. The metal comes out clean, dimensionally unchanged, and ready for metalwork or primer.

Frame and Chassis Cleaning

Strip rust, undercoating, and decades of road grime from frames, subframes, suspension components, and axle housings. Prepare surfaces for powder coating, POR-15, or restoration-grade chassis paint. Laser reaches box-section interiors and tight clearance areas that blast nozzles cannot access.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Laser cleaning is non-contact and generates negligible heat transfer to the substrate. We have cleaned 20-gauge and thinner sheet metal without any measurable distortion. Compare this to sandblasting, which deposits kinetic energy into the panel and causes stretching and warping on anything thinner than 16-gauge.
Yes. Casting numbers, date codes, foundry marks, and machining witness marks are all preserved because the laser removes only the surface contaminant layer. The base metal is untouched. For concours-level restorations where originality documentation matters, this is a significant advantage over blasting.
A complete engine teardown (block, heads, intake, exhaust, covers, oil pan, timing cover, flywheel) typically takes 8-16 hours depending on the number of components and contamination severity. We return parts clean, dry, and ready for inspection or machining. No post-cleaning chemical neutralization required.

Both. We work with professional restoration shops as a subcontractor (you send us the parts or we come to your shop) and directly with owners doing their own restorations. Minimum job charge is $750 for mobilization.
