Laser ablation is the only method that removes centuries of tarnish, oxidation, pollution deposits, and paint without touching the original surface underneath.
Sandblasting erodes soft stone, rounds sharp edges on carved detail, pits bronze and brass, and destroys gilding. Even gentle media (walnut shell, glass bead, baking soda) removes material from the substrate with every pass. On a 200-year-old limestone carving, that erosion is irreversible.
Chemical cleaning dissolves contaminants but also attacks the substrate. Acid reacts with calcium carbonate in marble and limestone, causing etching. Alkaline solutions discolor bronze patina. Solvents penetrate porous stone and wood, leaving residue that resurfaces as staining months later. On gilded surfaces, chemicals dissolve the gold leaf along with the tarnish.
Laser cleaning avoids all of these mechanisms. The laser energy is absorbed by the contaminant (tarnish, oxidation, pollution crust, paint, biological growth) and reflected by the substrate (metal, stone, ceramic). There is no contact, no chemistry, and no water. The original surface emerges intact at the molecular level.
Each laser pulse removes microns of contaminant. The operator controls cleaning depth pass by pass. On gilded surfaces, the tarnish comes off and the gold stays. On patinated bronze, the cleaning stops at exactly the depth the conservator specifies.

Full patina removal to bare bronze is also possible when the conservator or owner specifies it.
The laser parameters are tuned so that tarnish and oxidation absorb the energy while the gold layer reflects it. On intact gilding, the laser cleans without removing the gold. On areas where gilding has already failed or lifted, the laser reveals the base metal underneath. We test on an inconspicuous area first and coordinate with the conservator on any gilded object.
